Supporting Spring Tank Studios Jazz Camp for Girls 2025

February 22, 2025 Julie Voisey

At The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation we are committed to breaking down barriers in the arts and ensuring all young people have access to creative opportunities. That’s why we’re proud to support Jazz Camp for Girls 2025, a fantastic initiative by Spring Tank Studios that introduces girls aged 8-14 to the joy of jazz music.

To celebrate International Jazz Day, this one-day camp provides a supportive and inspiring environment where participants can explore improvisation, rhythm, and ensemble playing. Led by professional jazz musicians Nicola Farnon and Dave Sheard, the camp will give young girls a chance to develop confidence, musical skills, and a sense of community

Currently, women represent only around 20% of the jazz industry. By engaging girls at a crucial stage in their development, this programme encourages them to see themselves as future musicians, breaking down gender imbalances in jazz.

We believe in the power of music to inspire, build confidence, and create lasting connections. By supporting Jazz Camp for Girls 2025, we are helping to shape a more inclusive future for young musicians.

Supporting the Devonshire Green Stage at Tramlines Fringe Festival

February 17, 2025 Julie Voisey

JuJu Club presenting Community Music at Tramlines Fringe Festival

JuJu Club, has been at the heart of Sheffield’s world music scene for over three decades, dedicated to showcasing diverse musical talent and creating opportunities for underrepresented artists. Their mission is to provide music-based entertainment to the public, organise fundraising events, support and advise organisers of music events, and promote musicians from minority ethnic backgrounds. They are also committed to nurturing young music makers by providing opportunities for them to develop and perform.

For 36 years, JuJu Club has played a key role in promoting world music events in Sheffield, including managing the Sharrow Festival—a free multicultural event with two music stages—for 18 years. Since the Tramlines Festival began in 2009, they have taken responsibility for its community-based side, working alongside Sarah Nulty, whose support was vital in ensuring Tramlines remained an inclusive and accessible festival for the people of Sheffield. Every year, apart from during the height of Covid, they have programmed and managed a stage in the Peace Gardens or, more recently, on Devonshire Green, always aiming to entertain family-based audiences while maintaining high musical quality.

When Tramlines moved to Hillsborough, many in Sheffield campaigned for a free festival to remain in the city centre, staying true to Tramlines’ roots. With the support of Sheffield Council, they established the Tramlines Fringe Festival, ensuring that accessible, community-driven performances remained a vital part of the event.

Sarah Nulty was passionate about the power of music to unite, uplift, and create opportunities for those who might otherwise be overlooked. Her vision for Tramlines was one of inclusion, ensuring that music remained a force for good in Sheffield. The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation continues this work, supporting projects that use music to change lives.

This grant will enable Sparkle Sistaz, Tracks, and Blue Street Brass to perform on the Fringe Stage, providing a platform for diverse talent and celebrating Sheffield’s grassroots music scene—values that Sarah championed throughout her life.

At JuJu Club, they believe that music has the power to inspire, heal, and bring people together. With our support they can continue to provide opportunities for grassroots musicians and ensure that the Tramlines Fringe remains a truly inclusive celebration of Sheffield’s musical diversity.

We look forward to seeing these talented musicians take the stage. If you would like to learn more about our work or get involved, please get in touch.

Celebrating Musical Diversity in Sheffield: Supporting Young Talent through Pattern & Push

February 5, 2025 Julie Voisey

We are proud to continue our commitment to nurturing young musicians in Sheffield by supporting diverse music projects that foster talent and inclusivity. One such initiative is Pattern and Push, a programme empowering young singers, rappers, and producers across South Yorkshire.

Pattern and Push provides young vocalists and musicians with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities they need to develop their talent and pursue careers in music. Their mission aligns closely with ours: promoting inclusivity and opportunity in the arts.

Here’s why this programme matters:

  • Talent Development & Resources – It equips young musicians with essential tools to hone their craft and build a successful career.

  • Mentorship & Empowerment – Through training, workshops, and guidance, the programme helps aspiring artists overcome challenges and thrive.

  • Inspiring & Transformative Music – It encourages artists to create music that promotes personal growth, social change, and well-being.

  • We are thrilled to announce that our grant will fund studio time for the winner of the Pattern + Push 2025 competition. Open to vocalists aged 16-30 from South Yorkshire, this competition offers emerging artists the chance to professionally record and release a high-quality song.

The winner’s track will be promoted on social media and shared with radio stations, maximising exposure and providing a crucial stepping stone in their musical career. With professional production and marketing support, this initiative will help young artists gain visibility, confidence, and opportunities for growth.

From orchestral workshops to contemporary music competitions, our grants aim to create meaningful opportunities for young musicians. By investing in initiatives like Pattern and Push, we contribute to a richer, more inclusive musical landscape for Sheffield and beyond.

We extend our gratitude to Pattern and Push for their dedication to empowering young artists. We look forward to witnessing the incredible talent emerging from the Pattern + Push 2025 competition and beyond.

Together, we can celebrate and support the transformative power of music.

Supporting Young Wind and Percussion Players in Yorkshire

February 4, 2025 Julie Voisey

We are delighted to announce that the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra (YWO) has been awarded a grant to support their upcoming wind orchestra workshop day for young musicians in Sheffield. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to enable, encourage, and guide socially and economically disadvantaged individuals to enhance their musical talents.

The YWO's project is a shining example of how music can be a powerful tool for inclusion and development. By partnering with Sheffield Music Hub (SMH), YWO is creating an opportunity for young wind and percussion players to participate in a high-quality musical experience, regardless of their financial background. This workshop will be held in April 2025 at the 15 Paternoster Row, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2BX and Red Tape Studios, and it promises to be a transformative event for all involved.

The workshop is designed to be free of charge, ensuring that no young musician is excluded due to cost. This is particularly important for socially and economically disadvantaged young people, including those in the SMH widening participation scheme.: Participants will benefit from working with YWO's musical director, Keiron Anderson, and other experienced section leaders. This professional guidance will provide invaluable learning experiences and inspire the young musicians.

The event will culminate in a free public performance, fostering a sense of community and achievement. Families and friends will be able to attend without financial barriers, encouraging wider community support and engagement. Any voluntary donations collected during the performance will be reinvested into further widening participation activities, ensuring ongoing support for disadvantaged young musicians.

We believe that the YWO's workshop will not only enhance the musical talents of the participants but also contribute to a more inclusive and diverse musical community in Sheffield. We are proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the young musicians involved.

Thank you to the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra for their dedication to nurturing the next generation of wind and percussion players. We are excited to see the wonderful outcomes of this project

Enriching Lives Through Music at William Levick Primary School

January 24, 2025 Julie Voisey

We are always delighted to support local schools and our latest grant for William Levick School is no different

The School and its Parent, Teacher, and Friends Association (PTFA) are dedicated to supporting children within the school and the wider local community. Their efforts focus on creating opportunities for children to access enriching activities, particularly in music and the arts, which might otherwise be out of reach for many families.

The PTFA is seeking funding to purchase new musical instruments for the school. These will benefit all 210 pupils, aged 4 to 11, who will use them as part of their newly introduced music curriculum. Music has been shown to have a profoundly positive impact, especially for the school’s 28 children on the SEND register, including 5 with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs). The school also plans to incorporate music into sensor circuits, which are already helping to support these children’s wellbeing and development.

The reach of this project goes beyond the school itself. Community groups, such as the Brownies, which meet weekly on the school premises, will also have access to the new equipment. Additionally, the school choir regularly performs for local care homes, at community events such as Christmas and summer fairs, and in collaborative concerts with other schools. New instruments will allow these performances to include instrumental music, further enriching both the children’s experience and the joy they bring to the community.

This funding will have a meaningful and lasting impact on children’s education, wellbeing, and access to music, while also strengthening the school’s role as a hub for community connection.

Supporting RiteTrax: Empowering Communities Through Creativity

We are proud to support RiteTrax, a Sheffield-based social enterprise that transforms lives through the power of creativity. Established in 2015 by Michael Thompson and Adam Seymour, RiteTrax emerged from their lived experiences with challenges such as unemployment, mental health struggles, and involvement in the criminal justice system.

RiteTrax provides opportunities for vulnerable adults and young people, including those recovering from multiple disadvantages such as low income, addiction, and social isolation. Through inclusive workshops, one-to-one support, and grassroots cultural events, they offer participants a chance to build confidence, learn new skills, and be part of a supportive community.

The Impact of Our Funding

Our grant will fund 20 one-to-one support sessions for beneficiaries in spring 2025. These sessions will provide up to five individuals with focused guidance and creative opportunities, helping them improve their mental health, well-being, and self-esteem. Activities include music production, instrument learning, songwriting, and live performance—equipping participants with skills that promote personal growth and social inclusion.

RiteTrax’s work is making a tangible difference:

  • In the past 18 months, they’ve supported over 150 individuals, 80% of whom face multiple disadvantages.

  • Nearly half of their participants are aged 30 or younger, with this group reporting particularly high levels of mental health challenges.

  • The diverse mix of participants—25% from marginalised gender backgrounds and 49% from ethnic minority communities—promotes community cohesion and inclusivity.

Why This Matters

By funding this project, we are helping RiteTrax provide vital access to cultural activities for those who often feel excluded. The sessions offer more than creative skills—they foster a sense of belonging, boost mental health, and inspire hope for the future.

We are proud to partner with RiteTrax and support their mission to uplift vulnerable members of the Sheffield community. Together, we’re empowering individuals to create, connect, and thrive Click this link if you would like to find out more about Ritetrax and the work they do

Supporting St Luke’s Musical Therapy Program

January 10, 2025 Julie Voisey

We are delighted to fund St Luke’s latest initiative, a 12-week music therapy program at their Ecclesall Road South (ERS) site in Sheffield. St Luke’s provides compassionate care for individuals living with terminal illnesses, and this new project is designed to enhance the well-being of patients and their families through the transformative power of music.

This grant will fund a musical group leader, Julia Waldron, to guide participants in writing and producing a song that reflects what St Luke’s means to them. Julia will also teach patients how to play the ukulele, fostering joy and connection through music.

The program will engage 24 participants: 12 in a singing group and 12 in a ukulele group, with additional integration planned with St Luke’s creative writing group. Sessions will be open to patients, families, and bereaved individuals, ensuring a holistic approach to support. Participants include those with early-stage diagnoses, cancer, COPD, MND, Parkinson’s, and other palliative conditions.

Music therapy offers significant benefits, including:

  • For COPD patients: Breathing exercises integrated into music therapy improve breathing, reduce depression, and enhance exercise endurance.

  • For Parkinson’s patients: Music stimulates brain areas associated with rhythm and movement, encouraging physical activity, improving motivation, and enhancing quality of life.

  • For all participants: Music therapy alleviates stress, combats loneliness, and provides a sense of shared joy and purpose.

Sessions will also incorporate Makaton for patients with speech impairments, ensuring inclusivity for those who have lost their voices due to illness or treatment.

St Luke’s will evaluate the program’s impact at the start and conclusion of the sessions, assessing improvements in mental health, confidence, and overall well-being.

By supporting this initiative, we are proud to help St Luke’s continue their vital work in offering care, connection, and joy to those facing the challenges of terminal illness. Together, we’re making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
