Supporting Young Wind and Percussion Players in Yorkshire

February 4, 2025 Julie Voisey

We are delighted to announce that the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra (YWO) has been awarded a grant to support their upcoming wind orchestra workshop day for young musicians in Sheffield. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to enable, encourage, and guide socially and economically disadvantaged individuals to enhance their musical talents.

The YWO's project is a shining example of how music can be a powerful tool for inclusion and development. By partnering with Sheffield Music Hub (SMH), YWO is creating an opportunity for young wind and percussion players to participate in a high-quality musical experience, regardless of their financial background. This workshop will be held in April 2025 at the 15 Paternoster Row, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2BX and Red Tape Studios, and it promises to be a transformative event for all involved.

The workshop is designed to be free of charge, ensuring that no young musician is excluded due to cost. This is particularly important for socially and economically disadvantaged young people, including those in the SMH widening participation scheme.: Participants will benefit from working with YWO's musical director, Keiron Anderson, and other experienced section leaders. This professional guidance will provide invaluable learning experiences and inspire the young musicians.

The event will culminate in a free public performance, fostering a sense of community and achievement. Families and friends will be able to attend without financial barriers, encouraging wider community support and engagement. Any voluntary donations collected during the performance will be reinvested into further widening participation activities, ensuring ongoing support for disadvantaged young musicians.

We believe that the YWO's workshop will not only enhance the musical talents of the participants but also contribute to a more inclusive and diverse musical community in Sheffield. We are proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the young musicians involved.

Thank you to the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra for their dedication to nurturing the next generation of wind and percussion players. We are excited to see the wonderful outcomes of this project
