Bringing the Power of Music to Sheffield Children’s Hospital

July 8, 2025 Julie Voisey

At the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation, we believe in the profound impact that music can have on wellbeing, especially for children and families facing challenging times. We are thrilled to announce our latest grant to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, supporting a truly special musical initiative within the hospital.

This grant will fund four live harp sessions at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, delivered by the talented harpist Ruth Lee. Ruth will bring her harp directly into wards and waiting areas, performing well-known pop songs chosen by the children and their families. Each session will last around three hours and is expected to reach up to 60 people—including patients, families, and hospital staff.

For many children, especially those staying in hospital for extended periods, opportunities to experience live music are rare. These sessions are designed to bring joy and comfort to children who may be missing out on cultural experiences, break down social and financial barriers for families who might not otherwise have access to live music and create positive, memorable moments.

Feedback from previous sessions states that families and staff has been overwhelmingly positive. One parent shared that their son now looks forward to hospital appointments because of the harp music. Staff have noticed a calmer atmosphere, more relaxed patients, and even a reduction in complaints during the sessions. As one play specialist put it, “We would love to have it every day!”

Sheffield Children’s Hospital is one of only three specialist standalone children’s hospitals in the UK, renowned for its outstanding paediatric care and world-leading clinicians. Charitable donations play a vital role in funding life-saving equipment, vital research, and enriching experiences that go beyond what the NHS can provide. The hospital’s reputation draws families from across the UK and the world, all seeking the very best for their children.

We are always delighted to bring the power of music to such a worthy cause. By supporting these live harp sessions, we hope to provide a sense of calm, connection, and joy to children and families during difficult times—all through the universal language of music.

Thank you to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity for their dedication, and to Ruth Lee for sharing her gift of music. Together, we are making a real difference, one note at a time.
